Senator Joseph McCarthy helped purge our government of soviet spies, protecting our countries' classified information from being accessed by the soviets. McCarthy helped ensure the people were aware of the threat towards our government so they could be cautious, and defend themselves properly against communists and alert the government if a situation should present itself.
Who was caught
Joseph McCarthy's harsh investigation of the American government did bring victories to the United States, helping catch many under cover communists and communist sympathizers within the government. If McCarthy had not conducted such meticulous investigations, we may never have had caught the people giving up valuable information about our government and weaponry to the Soviet Union. To the right are just some of the communist spies uncovered during the Red Scare thanks to McCarthy, or his influence.

Julius and Ethel Rosenburg - Headed a communist spy ring in the U.S. government that gave information to the Soviets
Aldrich Ames - Worked in the CIA and paid by the Soviet Union to give up government information. The KGB - many members of this Soviet group were caught. The KGB attacked the U.S. government many different ways. The Soble spy ring - group of Soviet spies led by husband and wife, Jack and Myra Soble. |
In the midst of this witch hunt for communists throughout the country, propaganda against communism began to show up everywhere. McCarthy helped make sure Americans were aware of this peril, allowing them to spread such propaganda to keep the people informed. To the right is just one of the example of the anti - 'red' (slang for communist) propaganda.
